Title

Discoveries of America Brown Symposium Program

Description

This document describes an outline for the 1992 Brown Symposium, titled “Discoveries of America.” The theme of the symposium was selected in order to coincide with the anniversary of Columbus’ arrival which occurred roughly five hundred years before, as well as the habitation of the continent by human beings roughly thirteen thousand years ago. The symposium discussed the various meanings of the “discovery” of America through an examination of the experiences of “Blacks, Women, Southwestern Explorers, the English, the Spanish [by way of Columbus], and Native Americans.” In the 1992 Southwestern Quarterly, Dr. T. Walter Herbert, organizer of the symposium, states, “For better or worse, this means that America is always being discovered and rediscovered.” It was proposed that the symposium would create a space for reflection as the passing of time continually intensifies the meaning of the “discovery” of the Americas.
